Best Time to Visit:
Great Migration (Peak Season): July to October. Witness millions of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River. Expect higher prices and more crowds.
Green Season (Lower Prices, Fewer Crowds): November to June. Still excellent for wildlife viewing, especially for birds and newborn animals (January-March). The landscape is lush and green. Roads can be muddy during heavy rains (April-May).
Accommodation: The Maasai Mara offers a range of accommodation, from budget-friendly tented camps to luxurious lodges and private conservancy camps. Options include:
Inside the Reserve: Keekorok Lodge, Sarova Mara Camp, Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Governors' Camp, Little Governors' Camp.
Bordering/Near the Reserve: Basecamp Adventure, Osero Enarau Camp, AA Lodge Maasai Mara, Olkinyei Mara Tented Camp, Talek Bush Camp.
Private Conservancies (offer more exclusive experiences, walking safaris, night drives): Porini Lion Camp (Olare Motogori Conservancy), Mahali Mzuri (Olare Motorogi Conservancy), Richard's River Camp (Mara North Conservancy), Saruni Mara (Mara North Conservancy), Eagle View Camp (Naboisho Conservancy).
Transportation:
Road Safari: Most common. Typically involves a 5-6 hour drive from Nairobi in a safari minivan (less costly) or 4x4 Land Cruiser Jeep (more comfortable, especially on rough roads).
Fly-in Safari: Fastest way to reach the Mara (about 1 hour from Nairobi's Wilson Airport). More expensive but maximizes time in the reserve and often includes game drives directly from the airstrip by the lodge/camp. Recommended for those with limited time or back problems.
