Nairobi and Nakuru Tour Overview

Best Time to Visit:

Dry Seasons (Best for wildlife viewing): June to February. During these months, the weather is generally dry, making roads easier to navigate and animals easier to spot as they congregate around water sources.

Flamingos: While flamingos are a highlight, their numbers can fluctuate depending on the lake's water levels and algae concentration. Historically, Jan-Feb and July-Sept offered the largest concentrations. Even if the flamingos are fewer, the park offers excellent rhino and other wildlife viewing.

Avoid: April and May (heavy rains can make roads muddy and game viewing challenging).

Accommodation: Lake Nakuru National Park offers several excellent accommodation options, both inside and just outside the park:

Inside the Park:

Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge: Luxury lodge with stunning views of the lake.

Lake Nakuru Lodge: Another popular option inside the park with good views.

The Cliff: A high-end, exclusive tented camp offering unparalleled views.

Outside the Park (in Nakuru town or nearby conservancies):

Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge: Just outside the park, offering comfort and good access.

Flamingo Hill Tented Camp: A popular mid-range tented camp.

Various hotels in Nakuru town (e.g., Sarova Woodlands Hotel and Spa, Midland Hotel Nakuru) for more budget-friendly options, though these will require a drive into the park each day.

Transportation:

Road Safari (Most Common): The drive from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park takes approximately 3-4 hours by road (around 160 km) on a well-maintained highway. Most safaris use custom-built safari minivans or 4x4 Land Cruiser Jeeps with pop-up roofs for optimal game viewing.

Fly-in (Less Common): While there's a small airstrip near Nakuru, scheduled flights are not common. Charter flights are possible but more expensive. Road travel is generally preferred for Lake Nakuru.

Nairobi and Nakuru Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Morning (7:00 AM - 8:00 AM): Your safari guide will pick you up from your hotel in Nairobi (or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, JKIA).

Journey to Lake Nakuru: Depart Nairobi and drive northwest through the scenic Great Rift Valley. You'll make a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for panoramic photos and to admire the vast geological formation.

Arrival & Lunch (Around 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM): Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park. Complete the park entry formalities and proceed to your chosen lodge or camp for check-in and lunch. Take some time to relax.

Afternoon Game Drive (3:00 PM - 6:30 PM): Embark on your first thrilling game drive. Lake Nakuru is famous as a rhino sanctuary, so you'll have excellent chances of spotting both black and white rhinos. Look out for Rothschild's giraffes, buffalo, waterbucks, impalas, zebras, and various predators like lions and leopards (though leopards are elusive). Drive along the lake shores to see the famous flamingos (if present in large numbers) and other diverse birdlife.

Evening: Return to your lodge/camp for dinner and overnight. Enjoy the sounds of the African bush.
Day 2
Early Morning Game Drive (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM): Start your day with an early morning game drive. This is often the best time to see predators active and to enjoy the softer morning light for photography. Explore different sections of the park, including the acacia woodlands and the bushy grasslands, searching for wildlife.

Breakfast (Around 9:00 AM): Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast.

Mid-Morning Activity (Options):

Relax at Lodge/Camp: Enjoy the facilities, like a swimming pool, or simply relax and take in the serene environment.

Visit Viewpoints: Head to famous viewpoints like Baboon Cliff, Lion Hill, and Out of Africa for breathtaking panoramic views of the lake, the surrounding landscape, and the wildlife below. These are fantastic spots for photos.

Makalia Falls: Drive to the southern end of the park to see the beautiful Makalia Falls (seasonal, more impressive after rains). You can often enjoy a short nature walk or picnic here.

Lunch: Have lunch at your lodge/camp or opt for a packed picnic lunch at one of the designated picnic sites within the park (e.g., Baboon Cliff, Makalia).

Afternoon Game Drive (3:00 PM - 6:30 PM): Continue your exploration of the park. Your guide will take you to areas where specific animals are known to frequent or to seek out any species you haven't yet seen. Pay attention to the diverse birdlife, including pelicans, cormorants, and a wide array of water birds and raptors.

Evening: Return to your lodge/camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 3
Leisurely Breakfast & Check-out: Enjoy your final breakfast at the lodge/camp.

Short Game Drive (Optional, if time permits and depending on your flight schedule): A brief game drive on your way out of the park can offer one last chance for wildlife sightings.

Departure to Nairobi (Around 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM): Begin your journey back to Nairobi.

Lunch (En Route): You will typically have a packed lunch or stop at a designated restaurant along the way.

Arrival in Nairobi (Around 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM): Arrive back in Nairobi and be dropped off at your hotel or transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for your onward flight.
